Follow The Progress: Monarch Butterfly Habitat In The Jean Sweeney Park
The Jean Sweeney Open Space Park Fund and Alameda Recreation & Parks Department are working together to create a Monarch Butterfly Garden in the East end of the Jean Sweeney park.
June 30, 2021 The logs have been put into place and the dirt delivered. ARPD summer program Operation Green Sweep provides youth an opportunity to work in Alameda's parks. Their project this year is to help with the Monarch Butterfly habitat. Here they worked to spread the dirt inside the ring of logs.
June 26, 2021 ARPD has delivered the logs that will surround the habitat area.
The Monarch Butterfly garden will require funding and volunteers from the community to make the garden a success. A Go-Fund-Me page has been created for donations. Donations can also be made from the "Donate" page on this website. All donations made toward the Monarch Butterfly Garden are tax deductable.
Volunteers who want to help with the Monarch Garden should send email to volunteer@sweeneyopenspacepark.org.
We are pleased to announce memorial donations for the Monarch Butterfly habitat from the following groups.
Brian Schumacher Memorial: donations from friends and family.
There are 27 acres between the East and West ends.
